Mahla Pearlman Oration 2020
For Fools Rush in Where Angels Fear to Tread: Criticism of the Judiciary Amidst the Climate Crisis
The Legal Practice Section and the Environment and Planning Law Association of New South Wales will be co-hosting the Mahla Pearlman Oration on 26 March 2020 at the Federal Court of Australia in Sydney.
The Oration "For Fools Rush in Where Angels Fear to Tread: Criticism of the Judiciary Amidst the Climate Crisis" will be given by leading barrister, Mr Bret Walker SC. In this oration, Mr Bret Walker SC discusses the limits of judicial review in the face of climate change policy inadequacy.
The Oration will also include the presentation of the Mahla Pearlman Australian Young Environmental Lawyer of the Year Award.
The Mahla Pearlman Oration and award honour the memory of the late Honourable Mahla Pearlman AO, former Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales (1992-2003), and former President of the Law Council of Australia (1989-90). The annual event is a tribute to Chief Judge Pearlman’s achievements and an inspiration to younger generations of environmental lawyers.
The Environment and Planning Law Association of New South Wales will host drinks and canapes after the Oration.
The Oration is a free event, however registration is essential.
The Oration will be followed by a dinner to celebrate the contribution of Justice Brian Preston SC, Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales, to the profession.
Please note, there is a limited number of dinner tickets. Tickets will be available until sold out.
