Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces
14 March 2019
On 13 February representatives from the Law Council of Australia’s Secretariat, Equal Opportunity Committee and Constituent Bodies attended a Legal Issues Roundtable in Sydney in relation to the National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces.
The discussion was chaired by Australia’s Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Kate Jenkins, and sought to access the perspectives and expertise of those who work in a range of roles across the legal profession. Attendees included barristers, solicitors and advocates from community legal centres, corporate law firms, peak bodies, women’s associations, unions, and more.
The discussion focused on the operation of the current legal framework in relation to sexual harassment, the efficacy of both external and internal complaints processes, experiences of how the law works in practice, and recommendations for change. The Law Council has now made its submission to the National Inquiry.
